- W2026530187 abstract "2103 After a long history as devices for functional rehabilitation, large therapeutic balls and rolls have recently been advertised as cardiovascular training tools. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of exercise on a large therapeutic roll (LTR) on aerobic capacity and strength of individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). METHODS: Six females with a diagnosis of de. nite MS (baseline mean [range]; age = 45.3 yrs [35–60], EDSS = 2.8 [2.0–4.0], VO2PEAK = 23.1 ml/kg/min [16–30], HR PEAK = 163 bpm [125–176], peak work load = 126 watts [105–150], body weight = 81.8 kg [58–123], BMI = 29.6 [22–41]) underwent maximal exercise testing on a combined arm-leg ergometer to determine VO2PEAK and HR PEAK as well as strength testing (bilateral maximal isometric voluntary contractions of 5 upper and 5 lower extremity muscle groups) before and after a 15 week aerobic training period on the LTR (30 min at 75% of HRPEAK plus 5 min warm-up and cool-down). Pre- and post training means were compared using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Tests. RESULTS: Fifteen weeks of training resulted in an increase in VO2PEAK (9%, p < 0.05), peak work load (15%, p = 0.11), lower extremity strength (10%, p < 0.05) and upper extremity strength (7%, p = 0.11). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that persons with MS with mild to moderate disease severity are able to improve aerobic fitness and muscle strength with appropriate exercise on a large therapeutic roll or ball. We suggest that therapeutic balls and rolls offer a fun, creative and unique mode of aerobic training, which not only trains the cardiovascular system, but in addition may improve functional mobility of persons with MS by improving strength and training balance and coordination as well." @default.
