Abt, Helmut A. ; Barnes, Ronnie C. ; Biggs, Eleanor S. ; Osmer, Patrick S. Abstract As a cluster the Pleiades has several distinctive characteristics. One is the unusually large rotational velocities among its B stars, whereas its early A stars have rotational velocities that are normal for their types. A second is the absence of metallic-line stars; this lack has been attributed by others to the cluster's small age. These characteristics seem to be correlated with the unusual binary frequencies reported here. At Kitt Peak nearly 600 spectra of 63 and 128 A/mm dispersion have been obtained of the 46 brightest stars in the Pleiades. The resulting radial velocities indicate that none of the 13 B~B9 stars show evidence of being members of closely spaced binaries with periods less than 100 days, whereas Petrie has shown that among field B stars approximately half are found to be in such systems. It is suggested that in the absence of close binaries tidal interaction has not been effective in slowing the rotation. In contrast, the rotational velocities of the 14 early A stars in the Pleiades are normal, as is the frequency of closely spaced binaries. Among the Pleiades A4-A9 stars the velocity ranges are small, which is characteristic of normal stars of such types in contrast to the metallic-line stars among which large velocity ranges are frequent. This absence of close binaries will not change with time and indicates that not only now, but at no time in the future, will the Pleiades have metallic-line stars.
