- W2026691259 abstract "Abstract Studies have been made of the effects of a number of metal chelates on both the combustion and the photo-oxidation of polypropylene. None of the chelates on their own have significant flame-retardant action but some of them have sizeable effects when used together with a moderate excess of Cereclor. Detailed information about the way in which the flammability of polypropylene depends on the concentrations of the various additives has been obtained from triangular diagrams; the results, taken in conjunction with extensive thermoanalytical measurements, show that the predominant mode of flame-retardant action is to encourage char formation from the polymer. While most of the metal chelates studied, and in particular the iron compounds, accelerate the photo-oxidation of polypropylene, three compounds, viz. ZnSalen, ZnAcAc and Sn(IV)AcAcCl2, have well-defined photostabilizing effects. Although these compounds all have some screening action, ZnSalen also functions partly as a singlet quencher and partly as a radical scavenger; ZnAcAc operates mainly by a light-scattering mechanism and Sn(IV)AcAcCl2 acts primarily as a radical scavenger. The last two compounds, which exert significant effects at low loadings, could thus be useful both as flame retardants and as photostabilizers for polypropylene." @default.
