- W202673627 abstract "Amacrine, interplexiform and bipolar cells of the inner nuclear layer of the retina (Figure 1) form synapses which are arranged in a spatial configuration in the inner plexiform layer. I shall call this configuration an array. Qualitatively, among vertebrates, this array of synapses appears to be similar from species to species. Two major categories of synapses are always present: conventional synapses in processes of amacrine or interplexiform cells, and ribbon synapses in the processes of bipolar cells (Boycott et al., 1975; Dowling and Boycott, 1966; Dowling, 1968; Dubin, 1970; Raviola and Raviola, 1967). The unambiguous anatomical differences between these two categories has permitted a quantitative analysis of the IPL which goes beyond counting. Quantitative analysis has demonstrated that both absolute numbers of synapses and ratios of ribbon to conventional synapses differ from species to species (Dowling and Boycott, 1966; Dowling, 1968; Dubin, 1970; Fisher, 1979a,b; Fisher and Easter, 1979; Fisher, 1976; Tucker and Hollyfield, 1977)." @default.
