- W2026899899 abstract "In response to intraspecific contact in the field, the agonistic behavior of the intertidal owl limpet, Lottia gigantea Sowerby (Gastropoda:Mollusca), ranges from forceful aggression to unequivocal evasion. In the present study, laboratory experiments demonstrated that the decision to fight or flee is strongly influenced by recent agonistic success or failure. Most limpets given an experience mimicking consecutive agonistic victories responded aggressively to subsequent contact. Limpets that were given an experience mimicking consecutive agonistic defeats responded evasively to subsequent contact. This experience-specific behavior was readily reversed by reversing the agonistic experience. In a separate experiment, we tested the effect of substratum cues on agonistic behavior. After giving each limpet 2 wk of either agonistic victories or agonistic defeats, we replaced the tile of each limpet's home range with an unfamiliar tile. Although limpets tested on unfamiliar substratum following both kinds of training were less aggressive, the differential eifect of training was not diminished. Thus, previous overall agonistic experience, perhaps in concert with substratum familiarity, appears to account for at least part of the diverse behavior shown by limpets in the field." @default.
