- W2026956857 abstract "Abstract Adult populations of Anopheles gambiae (Sensu lato) were sampled over a nine ‐ month period in two habitats in Baringo district, Kenya. The habitats were the Perkerra irrigation scheme and the Loboi Swamp. The sampling period covered parts of the dry season (January‐March), the long rainy season (March‐June), the cool dry period (July‐September) and the beginning of the short rains (October–December). The age composition and survival rates of females were estimated from parous ratios based on ovarian dissections. There was a seasonal variation in the age composition both within and between habitats. Parous rates were lowest in the dry season and highest in the cool dry season. In both habitats there was a significant difference between the lowest and highest parous rates (p < 0.010). Mean parous rates were significantly higher at Perkerra than at Loboi (p < 0.01). Daily survival rates were significantly higher at Perkerra than at Loboi (p < 0.001). The higher survival rate at Perkerra was thought to be due to factors related to irrigation, in particular the provision of cooler and more humid micro‐climates by growing crops and shade trees. The implication of these results to malaria transmission is discussed. Zusammenfassung Altersstruktur und Überlebensrate des Anopheles gambiae‐Komplexes im Baringo Distrikt, Kenia In einem Zeitraum von neun Monaten wurden adulte Anopheles gambiae in zwei verschiedenen Habitaten ‐ in der Bewässerungsanlage Perkerra und im Loboi‐Sumpfgebiet ‐ gesammelt. Der Sammelzeitraum umfaßte die Trockenzeit (Januar–März), die lange Regenzeit (März–Juni), die kühle Trockenzeit (Juli‐September) und den Beginn der kurzen Regenzeit (Oktober–Dezember). Die Altersstruktur und die Überlebensrate der Weibchen wurden anhand der Paarungsrate, diese wiederum über die Ovarienuntersuchung, ermittelt. Sowohl innerhalb als auch zwischen den beiden Habitaten ergaben sich in der Altersstruktur saisonale Unterschiede. Die Paarungsrate war in der Trockenzeit am niedrigsten, in der kühlen Trockenzeit am höchsten. In beiden Habitaten waren diese Unterschiede signifikant (p < 0.01). Die mittlere Paarungsrate und die tägliche Überlebensrate waren in Perkerra signifikant höher als in Loboi. Die höhere Überlebensrate in Perkerra war vermutlich durch die Bewässerung bedingt, insbesondere durch das kühlere und humidere Mikroklima in den bepflanzten Gebieten. Die Bedeutung dieser Ergebnisse in Bezug auf die Malariaverbreitung wird diskutiert." @default.
