- W2027340399 abstract "Obese children appear to assign higher ratings than non-obese children to perceived exertion during standardized exercise. Whether weight status influences perceptions of exertion in less structured physical activity is not well understood. PURPOSE: To evaluate differences in rating of perceived exertion (RPE) between healthy weight, overweight, and obese children engaged in play-based activity. METHODS: Forty-two children (22 M, 20 F, aged 8-10 years) participated for 8 weeks in a once weekly after school fitness and nutrition program; 26 were classified as healthy weight (BMI = 16.7 ± 1.4), 5 as overweight (BMI = 19.9 ± 1.4), and 11 as obese (BMI = 24.5 ± 2.9). Each session included 30 minutes of physical activity organized according to a unique play theme. Participants were allowed to self-regulate their effort. RPE values were collected immediately following activity using the OMNI walk/run pictorial scale. To accommodate inconsistent attendance, a mean RPE value was calculated across sessions for each participant. To better balance the analysis, overweight and obese participants were combined into a single group. Between-group differences in RPE were analyzed using an independent samples t-test (a = 0.05). RESULTS: On average, 84% of participants (range 24-39) attended any given session. RPE values for sessions ranged from 1.7 ± 2.6 to 5.0 ±3.6. Mean RPE values differed only slightly between healthy weight [mean (SD) = 3.7 (2.4)] and overweight or obese [mean (SD) =3.6 (2.8)] participants. No significant difference was found between groups [t(40) = 0.13, p=0.90)]. CONCLUSION: Regardless of BMI, 8 to 10 year old children appeared to perceive exertion similarly during play-based physical activity. The result suggests that relatively unstructured physical activity programs for young children may not need to consider RPE differences based on weight status. The result, however, also raises the possibility that overweight or obese young children allowed to self-regulate their exertion during play may not achieve levels of intensity equal to their healthy weight peers. To resolve these issues, future research should evaluate relationships among weight status, RPE and energy expenditure in young children engaged in play-based physical activity." @default.
