- W2027408812 abstract "The propagation and absorption of ion Bernstein waves were studied by use of the ray tracing method to predict the result of an experiment planned in the Large Helical Device (LHD) [M. Fujiwara et al., Nucl. Fusion 41, 1355 (2001)]. Three-dimensional data of the magnetic field (obtained from Biot–Savart’s law) and the associated magnetic flux given in an analytical expression were used in this calculation. Scans of various parameters were made: magnetic field strength, profiles of electron and ion temperatures and plasma density at the edge region, initial value of wave number parallel to the magnetic lines of force, starting position and direction of wave number. In many practical cases, however, electron Landau damping was so strong that the wave was absorbed in the peripheral region. For comparison, the same code was applied to a tokamak and a straight helical device. The difference of the wave damping processes of LHD from others may be attributed to the fact that the magnetic configuration of the LHD has mixed toroidal and helical ripples." @default.
