- W2027600655 abstract "Summary Water stress experiments were conducted on 2mm root apices of 15 day old raddish ( Raphanus sativus L. cv. Poosa Rashmi ) plants. Water stress was created by withholding of water supply or by exposure of the root apices to rapidly (ethylene glycol) and slowly (sorbitol and mannitol) permeating osmotica. Stress effects were studied as related to changes in water content, growth, solute and proline accumulation and respiration. Apex respiration showed no wounding response on excision. It decreased with decrease in apex water potential, reaching 40% of the non-stress control rate at-3 MPa irrespective of the mode of stress induction, such as by droughting of intact apices or by low osmotic potential of the excised apices only in case of unpermeable osmotica. Quantitatively, however, apex respiration was not related to turgor potential but seemed to reflect the decrease in cell water content. Conservation of ethanol-insoluble dry matter and water, and accumulation of ethanol-soluble carbohydrates and proline were recorded in the apex during the stress period. Despite decreasng water potential the calculated daily translocation of soluble carbohydrate into the apex during the whole water stress period remained nearly constant. The substrate supply within the apex was not the limiting factor for root apex respiration during the stress period." @default.
