- W2027830143 abstract "In a previous paper (McLaren, King, and Copland, 1955) it was suggested that the use of dihydroxyphenylisatin* could increase the accuracy of the barium enema examination of the colon. Further experience has not altered this view, but has provided a clearer concept of the type of case in which improved diagnostic results may be expected. From our own experience and from the comments of others it is apparent that the use of dihydroxyphenylisatin in barium enemata gives disappointing results if standard techniques are used, as the mucosal pattern is lost too rapidly. This is not, however, the way in which the adjuvant should be used as in such conditions it is too efficient an evacuant. When the technique described in the preliminary communication is employed, not only can mucosal detail be demonstrated but although the sigmoid may not empty completely, each and every part of the bowel can be studied as it contracts and shortens. Abnormal colonic activity may be seen, and the patient's symptoms may be dramatically reproduced. Thus, information beyond that normally available by the routine methods of studying the colon, caecum and terminal ileum can be obtained. Adequate preparation is of course essential for any examination of the colon, but gains added importance when using dihydroxyphenylisatin, because we believe the effect produced is one of direct irritation of the mucous membrane." @default.
