- W202783196 abstract "A telecommunications network can be regarded as composed of three “layers”: the transmission layer that consists of transmission links and terminal equipment, the “cross-connect” layer that consists of digital cross-connect technology, and the “traffic” layer that consists of trunk groups and circuit switches. Protection and restoration can be accomplished by protection switching technology (self-healing rings and point-to-point protection systems) at the transmission layer, DCS restoration methods at the cross-connect layer, and call-routing rules and network management procedures at the traffic layer. This layered model of network structure allows us to consider various combinations of these technologies. This paper offers mathematical models for investigating how these layers can be co-ordinated to achieve cost-effective protection and restoration of network performance for network failures and how networks can be designed to ensure a given degree of survivability at reasonable cost. In particular, the models allow us to show in one simple case that dynamic traffic routing offers a reduction of more than 10% in the cost of networks designed for a specified level of survivability. Further, we show in one example that a combined cross-connect and traffic layer protection scheme provides a 16 % reduction in cost over any feasible single-layer solution. The insights obtained from these models will be helpful in developing methods for survivable network designs under given technologies in the different layers, for example, for the Common Channel Signaling (CCS) network at the traffic layer, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) connection management at the traffic layer, and ATM virtual path cross-connect (VPX) routing at the cross-connect layer." @default.
