- W2027972341 abstract "The field ion microscope has been used to study the surface diffusion and overlayer structure of Ni atoms on the (100) plane of W. Single Ni atoms were found to become mobile on W(100) at temperatures above 350 K and diffused with an activation energy of 1.01 eV. Nickel dimers formed in the temperature range from 350–400 K and became mobile at temperatures above 390 K. Two-dimensional Ni clusters were not formed upon heating randomly dispersed atoms but were produced by deposition at temperatures above 300 K. Field evaporation of these clusters to just a few atoms indicated that the structure of Ni overlayers on W(100) is pseudomorphic. Multilayer growth was detected only after the first monolayer was completed and the multilayers were uniform up to at least 21 layers (i.e., no three-dimensional islands were observed). The results are compared to the surface diffusion and clustering properties of Ni on W(110)." @default.
