Abstract We analyze the interaction between the interstellar plasma and the cosmic rays ejected from a supernova in Colgate's model in order to determine if the cosmic rays can escape. The expansion of the cosmic rays is described, and the effects of both the stellar and interstellar magnetic fields are discussed. Applying the results of a one-dimensional computer simulation of instabilities between counterstreaming plasmas, we conclude that a significant fraction of the cosmic rays can escape along the interstellar magnetic field, although the energy spectrum may be altered in the process.
