- W2028200315 abstract "Introduction: Birth weight (BW) is a marker of intrauterine growth and nutrition, and evidence is increasing that BW is associated with health in later life. Therefore it is of interest to describe secular changes in BW. Methods: We analysed data from the Danish national birth register. All singleton live births from 1973 to 2002 were included (>1.5 million). Birth length is also available and will be analysed together with ponderal index. Results: The 10, 50, and 90th percentiles increased steadily during the period (from 2625 to 2860 g, from 3375 to 3550 g, and from 4125 to 4220 g, respectively). Furthermore, the percent of newborns weighing more than 4000 and 4500 g increased (from 10.3 to 20.4 %, and from 1.5 to 4.0 %, respectively). Conclusion: Possible explanations of this marked increase in BW over the whole distribution are increases in maternal prepregnancy BMI and weight gain during pregnancy, or a decrease in smoking among pregnant women. According to the “fetal origin hypothesis”, the fetus responds to undernutrition by adaptions that permanently change the structure and function of the body that later in life leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Also there is some evidence from offspring of diabetic mothers that overnutrition during fetal life is associated with increased risk of diabetes and obesity. Since there normally is found a positive association between BW and body mass index (BMI) in later life, it has been discussed whether an increasing BW could play a role in the current obesity epidemic. However, some studies have found a negative association between BW and a central pattern of fat, making the association between BW and later BMI complex." @default.
