Three sensory neurons in the third segment increase their basal rate of firing as temperature falls and increase as temperature rises. They are sensitive to temperature changes caused by evaporation from cut surfaces of fresh leaves as opposed to wilted leaves. Three receptors in the region of the medial sensillum basiconicum increase their basal rate of firing in the presence of moist air and cease firing in dry air. These capacities for detecting changes in temperature and r.h. allow for mediating information to the central nervous system about turgidity of a leaf, which to the animal is an important indicator of the quality of its food." @default.
