- W2028304860 abstract "Enhancement of electrical activity of rat caudal nerve and of single isolated nerve fibers of the earthworm during irradiation has been reported by Bachofer (1) and Bachofer and Gautereaux (2-4). Muscle fibers demonstrate electrical activity similar to that of nerves, and this fact indicated that enhancement of activity of muscle might also occur during irradiation. Since, in muscle, electrical activity is closely associated with mechanical activity, it seemed possible that such alterations, if they occurred, might be detected in either the electrical activity or the mechanical activity. Experiments were performed to determine whether such changes did, indeed, occur. This report concerns dynamic changes in the mechanical activity of the rat diaphragm recorded during y-irradiation. Several authors have considered the effects of high-energy radiation on the mechanical activity of isolated frog muscle (5-7) and rat diaphragm (8), but all have reported only a gradual deterioration of the postirradiation response of the muscle. However, in none of the reports was the response of the muscle during irradiation analyzed." @default.
