- W202859306 abstract "In the fish retina dendritic terminals of second order neurons invaginate into the synaptic endings of the photoreceptors. Within this very specific synaptic arrangement alterations in the ambient light conditions are accompanied by remarkable morphological alterations of the synaptic connections between cones and horizontal cells. During light-adaptation fingerlike new neurites, called spinules, grow out from the dendritic terminals of the horizontal cells. During dark-adaptation these spinules are retracted. This synaptic plasticity is correlated with the expression of colour opponency in horizontal and ganglion cells. Spinules are therefore considered to be the site of the colour coding feedback synapse between cones and horizontal cells. The formation of spinules can be examined in the electron microscope and their expression can be influenced by drugs. In this report we give an overview of the known neurotransmitters and intracellular mechanisms involved in spinule formation. In addition, we present data to show that the spinules of the fish retina seem to be a valuable model to study the cellular mechanisms of colour vision defects caused by certain pharmaca in humans." @default.
