- W2028673044 abstract "The mechanisms involved in differentiation and eventual degeneration of the corpus luteum have been intensively investigated. Luteal differentiation is characterized by dramatic increases in blood flow and cellular alterations in size, hormonal responsiveness and steroidogeneic enzyme concentrations. From this differentiation arise two cell types, large and small luteal cells, that produce large quantities of progesterone. If pregnancy does not occur this structure also has the capacity for rapid degeneration. Luteal degeneration is characterized by decreases in blood flow, inhibition of luteal progesterone production and death of luteal cells. This review summarizes some of the recent information on the intracellular mechanisms involved in the differentiation and degeneration of luteal cells." @default.
