- W2028762761 abstract "Objective: Most implantations of intraocular lenses (IOL) of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are performed by metal forceps. Especially in difficult surgical situations like shallow anterior chamber, small pupil, tunnel incision or secondary implantation with scleral IOLsuturing, alterations of the IOL-surface cannot always be avoided. Study Design: Various metal implantation instruments of different manufacturers were used to grip PMMA-IOLs. One group of IOLs was produced by lathe-cut and the other by compression molding method. An invitro experiment was developed to produce and measure a defined pressure on the IOL-surface. Subsequently all IOLs were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: All implantation forceps showed a specific defect pattern on the PMMA surface, which depended on size, form and surface of the contact area of the forceps. The PMMA-alterations were increased by higher pressure. There was no difference in the defects of the two PMMA-IOL types. Conclusion: PMMA-IOL surfaces can be damaged by metal implantation forceps. Instruments with smooth and small areas of contact are recommended. Another forceps material might improve quality of PMMA-IOL, implantation and avoid surface alterations." @default.
