- W2028923067 abstract "A conduction-electron mass enhancement $ensuremath{lambda}$ for the 2-K superconducting $ensuremath{alpha}$ phase of uranium was obtained from a comparison of the linear coefficient of the electronic heat capacity at high temperature, ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{b}$, with that at low temperature, ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{0}$. A $ensuremath{lambda}$ of 0.9 ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{} 0.2 was found. The ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{0}$ value used was obtained in a high-pressure experiment reported in the literature. The ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{b}$ value was extracted from published heat-capacity measurements below 500 K by adjustment of the data to the volume of the low-temperature experiment, subtraction of an appropriate Debye function, correcting for anharmonicity, and graphically fitting the resultant electronic contribution. The uncertainty in $ensuremath{lambda}$ is dominated by the uncertainty in the characterization of the constant-volume lattice anharmonicity, which was estimated using Wallace's recent empirical correlation based on Gruneisen constants. Using the observed magnitude of $ensuremath{lambda}$ and ${T}_{c}$, McMillan's equation for the superconducting transition temperature indicates that large Cooper-pair-weakening interactions are probably present in $ensuremath{alpha}$-uranium. It is known that the ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{0}$ value of the 2-K superconducting $ensuremath{alpha}$ phase of uranium is ensuremath{sim}30% higher than the ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{0}$ value of the lower-${T}_{c}$ single-crystal uranium at zero pressure. A combined analysis of the electronic heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility below room temperature indicates that the different values of ${ensuremath{gamma}}_{0}$ reflect not only changes in the unenhanced electronic density of states at the Fermi energy, but also substantial changes in $ensuremath{lambda}$. Furthermore, the low-pressure depression of ${T}_{c}$ relative to the $ensuremath{alpha}$-phase ${T}_{c}$ value of 2 K is in large part due to a depression in $ensuremath{lambda}$." @default.
