- W2029105452 abstract "Summary Objective To compare blood pressure (BP) responses after incremental cycle ergometry (CYC) and arm-cranking (ARM). Methods Eleven non-hypertensive volunteers (122/72 mmHg of resting systolic/diastolic BP) performed: (1) incremental CYC; (2) incremental ARM; and (3) control session (CON). Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures were measured at rest, during exercise and during 1 h of post-exercise recovery. Results There was a significant increase in SBP (23 mmHg to ARM and 34 mmHg to CYC) and in DBP (17 mmHg to ARM) during exercise. Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) of SBP was observed after CYC (−17 mmHg) and ARM (−12 mmHg) and PEH of DBP was observed throughout recovery period after ARM (−8 to −9 mmHg), with no significant reductions after CYC. Conclusion We conclude that the arm-cranking exercise would be as effective as the cycle ergometer exercise in promoting reductions in post-exercise blood pressure (BP). This suggests that this exercise mode may be used as an aid in BP control, even for non-hypertensive people, in the prevention of hypertension." @default.
