- W2029148417 abstract "The concentrations of potassium, calcium and magnesium are maintained remarkably stable in mammalian cerebrospinal fluid in the face of severe and prolonged disturbances in the concentrations of these ions in blood plasma. There are good reasons for supposing that the ionic composition of the interstitial fluid of brain is equally well controlled and that this results in an immunity of the fnnction of central neurons from the effects of some electrolyte disturbances in blood. Two possible mechanisms may be considered: a static extracellular fluid in association with particular relationships between unidirectional ion fluxes across the barriers and the concentrations of the ion in plasma and extracellular fluid, secretion of extracellular fluid of constant composition together with bulk flow and drainage of the secreted fluid before significant change in its composition has occurred. Some of the experimental results bearing on the problem are discussed and it is suggested that the homeostasis of calcium and magnesium in cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid may be largely explained by secretion by the choroid plexuses of a fluid of near constant composition in the presence of a relatively impermeable blood-brain barrier to these ions. In the case of potassium, active mechanisms sited at the blood-brain barriers itself must be invoked. These may be associated with the astrocytic component of the barrier. However, homeostasis of potassium in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain of rats subjected to portccaval anastomosis is not grossly abnormal—despite marked structural changes (swelling, vaculation and infolding of the perivascular plasma membrane) in the astrocytic end-feet." @default.
