- W2029148768 abstract "Because of issues such as perceived concerns about time-saving and safety, some practitioners have recommended repetitions-to-fatigue tests in place of one repetition at maximum (1-RM) tests of muscular strength. While several studies have explored the relationship between 1-RM and the number of repetitions at different percentages of 1-RM, the predictive validity of the 225 reps-to-fatigue test (225-RTF) for the bench press lift (as used by the NFL) does not appear to have been formally studied. Thus, the purpose of this study was determine whether the 225-RTF is a valid predictor of 1-RM bench press-in this case in college football players. Ninety eight NCAA Division II football players at a midwestern university were tested on the 1-RM bench press, the 225-RTF bench press, and on other potential predictor variables(e.g., height, weight body fat percent, 1-RM squat and power clean, vertical jump, chest girth and arm length). Mean 1-RM bench press was 269 lbs.(SD = 40.81 lbs.). Mean 225-RTF bench press was 7.2 reps(SD = 5.5 reps, range = 0 - 21). The 1-RM and 225-RFT bench press were highly correlated (r =.96, p <.001). Stepwise regression analysis found three significant (p <.05) predictor variables. The 225-RFT plus the 1-RM squat and the 1-RM power clean scores explained 94 percent of the variance in 1-RM bench press performance. The 225-RTF alone accounted for 92 percent of the variance (SEE ± 10.75 lbs.), and thus the squat and power clean scores did not add to the prediction substantively. Prediction was better in the 0 - 10 rep. range(R2adj. =.85) than in the > 10 rep. range(R2adj. =.76). In this study the 225-RTF data were collected in less than half the time it took to obtain the 1-RM data. These data support the 225-RTF as a valid predictor of 1-RM bench press for most college players. However, because some players (12%) recorded zero reps., while others (27%) did more than 10 reps., the 225-RTF may not be a uniformly safe and valid alternative for all." @default.
