- W2029194741 abstract "Contemporary interest in dietary fibre arose when claims were made that some diseases endemic within modern Western life resulted from a deficiency of vegetable fibre in the diet. It was suggested that there had been a marked deterioration in the fibre content of the diet as a result of changes in wheat milling processes in the late 19th century, so that white bread rather than whole meal bread became the standard intake. The main proponents of this theory, Cleave (5), Burkitt and Trowell (4) and Painter (34) produced figures which suggested an increase in ischaemic heart disease, appendicitis, diabetes, diverticular disease and carcinoma of the colon as a result of a decreasing fibre content of the diet." @default.
