- W2029215150 abstract "A 73-year-old, right-handed woman was admitted to neurorehabilitation 3 weeks after a right posterior cerebral artery infarct destroying the hippocampus, parahippocampal, fusiform, and lingual gyri (Brodmann’s areas 17, 18, 19, 27, 28, 31, 36, 37, and 38) (figure 1, A). She had complete left homonymous hemianopia; visual acuity was >1.0 bilaterally. There was severe left hemispatial neglect and visuo-constructive failures. Verbal and nonverbal fluency were normal; color-word interference was slightly increased. Verbal span was five digits; visual span was impaired (three cubes). Long-term memory was intact for verbal, but severely deficient for nonverbal, material. Figure. (a) Magnetic resonance image (T2-weighted) 3 months post stroke showing a large right medial temporo-occipital lesion (Brodmann’s areas 17, 18, 19, 27, 28, 31, 36, 37, and 38). (b) Face discrimination tasks showing the pictures of the chairman (first column, “normal,” above) and the resident physician (“normal,” below), which the patient failed to discriminate. She had similar difficulty when only the contour was shown (“contour”). Discrimination was markedly better when the faces were presented upside-down (“inverted”) or when only the central parts were presented (“central”).The patient soon became conspicuous for her frequent confusion of the resident (T.N.) and the chairman (A.S.) of the clinic. Whereas she correctly recognized the personnel on the ward and the visitors, she consistently confused the names of the …" @default.
