- W2029289165 abstract "Abstract The formation rates of low molecular weight, volatile hydrocarbons (CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 ) produced in the reaction of H atoms with Illinois No. 6 coal have been measured over the temperature range of −82 °C to 170 °C. Above 27 °C, the activation energy for all three paraffin formations was identical, 15 ± 3 kJ mol −1 , within experimental error. The E act associated with acetylene formation was 22 ± 4 kJ mol −1 . It was observed that both CH 4 and C 2 H 2 initial formation rates are significantly higher than observed at longer reaction times. In addition, an apparent low activiation energy reaction route exists for CH 4 formation which is not available for the other products monitored. The data obtained in this work are compared with results from other H atom + coal studies as well as with recent suggestions as to the probable structure of bituminous coals." @default.
