- W2029328329 abstract "Adrenal medullae. Evidence for an increase in sympathetic nervous activity during ether or chloroform anaesthesia was first obtained by Elliott in 1912. He observed that inhalation of these anaesthetics by cats or dogs caused a reduction in the pressor activity of extracts of their adrenal medullae, and that this depletion could be prevented by section of the splanchnic nerves. Much later, Elmes and Jefferson (1942) compared the relative rates of medullary depletion caused by three anaesthetics, finding rapid depletion by diethyl ether, less rapid by cyclopropane, and least rapid by a combination of pentobarbitone and morphine. Since the adrenal content of catecholamine is determined by an algebraic sum reflecting uptake of circulating amines, synthesis within the gland, metabolic rate in situ, and the rate of discharge, changes in content are not the most accurate measure of the level of sympathetic nervous activity." @default.
