- W2029421159 abstract "MAY, RICHARD B., and NORTON, JANICE M. Training-Task Orders and Transfer in Conservation. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1981, 52, 904-913. 2 experiments were carried out in which groups of children (X age = 68 months, SD = 5.7) were matched on number, length, mass, and liquid conservation scores and then trained on a distance-layout task developed by Inhelder et al. Training involved presenting easy, medium, and hard items in 1 of 3 orders-(a) easy to hard, (b) hard to easy to hard, or (c) alternating easy and medium before hard. 2 orders starting with an easy item led to better transfer on conservation tasks than no training or a neo-Piagetian order which started with a difficult item. Performance increments were stable for 4 conservation subtests on successive posttests. Whether pretest levels restrict conservation improvement depends on the criterion of improvement used. Extent of improvement measured by errorless posttest conservation depended on pretest conservation level. However, susceptibility to improvement of any magnitude was not related to pretest level." @default.
