- W2029473432 abstract "In the course of experimentation on orientational perception, attention has been given to the time sense, especially as it is affected by reduced sensory input. The available data suggested the following questions: (a) Do verbal time estimates of the duration of an interval of reduced sensory input differ from verbal estimates of a control interval of about the same duration? and (b) Is there a relationship between the former estimates and the reports of the subjective (personal) sense of the speed of time passage within the same interval? The duration of reduced sensory input was 1y2 hr.; duration of the control interval varied from 1% to 1% hr. It was spent in either reading or filling out questionnaire forms. Control estimates were available for 8 Ss. The reduced input, or experimental, interval, was estimated less accurately than the control interval by 7 of these 8 Ss. The sign test probability of 7 out of 8 Ss making a larger error in estimating the experimental interval is .07 (twotailed). All Ss underestimated the duracion of the experimental interval more than the duracion of the control interval. The sign-test probability of all Ss' underestimating the experimental interval to a greater extent than the control interval is ,008 (two-tailed ) . Data on the relationship between subjective feelings and actual estimates were collected for 15 Ss. Fourteen Ss underestimated the interval of reduced input, but of these 14, only 1 felt that time passed more quickly, 8 that it passed more slowly than usual, and 5 that its passage was normal. The one S who did not underestimate the length of the interval also felt that the passage of time was normal. It can cherefore be concluded that a 90-min. interval of reduced sensory inpuc distorts the time sense, as shown by almost universal underestimation. However, there is no clear relationship between such distortion and changes in feelings about time passage. The lack of relationship between these two aspects of time perception agrees with Steinberg's (1955) conclusion, based on a similar comparison between objective and personal time, when Ss were exposed to nitrous oxide." @default.
