- W2029498348 abstract "This paper reviews the mechanical properties of pipeline girth welds produced by a number of arc welding processes which have been studied by British Gas. Consideration is also given to process characteristics, such as welding speed and ease of use, since these have an important bearing on the acceptability of the process. Traditional stovepipe welding techniques, using cellulosic electrodes, normally produce welds with adequate toughness for land pipeline applications. However, increasingly severe requirements for offshore pipelines and the dangers of weld metal as well as heat affected zone cracking, have led to greater interest in low hydrogen welding techniques. Vertical down low hydrogen manual electrodes are shown to be capable of producing welds with good toughness, but may require further development to improve operating characteristics. The semi-automatic gas metal arc welding process has suffered from a reputation for poor reliability and inconsistent welding quality which has limited its use. The introduction of self-shielded flux-cored filler wires has led to renewed interest in semi-automatic welding. Fast welding speeds are possible, but there is a problem in achieving consistent levels of toughness with present carbon-manganese flux-cored consumables. The properties of welds produced using mechanised gas metal arc welding systems are discussed. It is shown that further development of commercially available filler wires is desirable in order to increase the ease with which requirements for weld toughness demanded by the application of ‘fitness for purpose’ standards can be met. Finally, the results of early trials with a mechanised gas-shielded flux-cored welding system are given." @default.
