- W2029509711 abstract "Abstract A semiquantitative molecular model for potassium efflux based upon recent studies of membrane voltage fluctuations in the resting state and phospholipid leaflet structure is examined. Rough computations, using the kinetic theory of gases, are made employing the concept of the molecular sieve and already existing channels to predict rates of potassium efflux and binding energies. It is shown that the membrane electric field is by itself probably not strong enough to account for alignment of the phospholipid polar groups. Further examination of the coupling between the dipoles of the polar groups suggests that cooperative phenomena will account for the noise spectrum recently obtained by Derksen and Verveen [4]. A semidetailed analogy between an anti-ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic thin film and the dipole layer is used. In this connection the possibility that phase transitions play a role in membrane function is noted." @default.
