- W2029552110 abstract "Abstract Hoffmann's method was applied to determine a suitable cutoff value in mass screening. This method was originally used to obtain a normal reference range from patients' test results by truncating extreme values on probability paper. This new cutoff method should be less affected by fluctuations in the number of extreme values than conventional methods using a fixed value or a percentile point. The efficiency of the method was evaluated in actual neonatal screening of free thyroxine (FT4) for detection of hypothyroidism and also in a computer simulation study on a random combination of values in healthy and hypothyroid babies In both studies a reference sample of mildly hypothyroid values was measured or generated. The virtual number of recalls and the detection rate of the reference were determined serially at various cutoff values. By the probability paper method, the cutoff value required to achieve 100% detection of the reference corresponded to a recall rate of 11 %, while by the fixed value and the percentile method 100% detections corresponded to recall rates of 41% and 15%, respectively. By the new cutoff protocol, two hypothyroid babies were found, one with primary and the other with secondary hypothyroidism, among 5400 babies screened." @default.
