- W2029552810 abstract "1654 It is known that muscle fiber length (the number of sarcomeres in series) plays a significant role in determining maximal velocity of shortening. To determine if muscle fascicle length contributes to running performance, we studied 19 male sprinters (SPR, 100m best; 10.3-10.9 sec), 20 male long-distance runners (LDR, 5000m best; 13.7-14.5 min) and 20 age-matched, untrained male controls (CON). Fascicle pennation angle (PANG) and isolated muscle thickness (MTH) of the vastus lateralis (VL) and gastrocnemius medialis (MG) and lateralis (LG) muscles were measured in vivo by B-mode ultrasound, and fascicle length (FASL) was estimated. Standing height and upper and lower limb lengths were similar among the groups. Fat-free mass was greater in SPR (59.6±3.1 kg) than LDR (51.7±4.0 kg) and CON (50.1±5.3 kg). Architecture data are summarized in the table below. SPR had a significantly greater MTH of the VL, MG and LG muscles than LDR and CON; LDR and Con were similar. In all muscles, PANG was similar between SPR and CON, but less than LDR. In VL, FASL (absolute and relative to limb length) was significantly greater in SPR, and significantly less in LDR compared to CON. In MG and LG, absolute and relative FASL was greater in SPR than LDR. Thus, SPR had longer fascicles and lesser pennation angles than LDR which would favor shortening velocity. In conclusion, FASL appears to be associated with running performance, sprinting versus long distance performance.Table" @default.
