- W2029831174 abstract "A model of acoustic wave propagation and scattering in an inhomogeneous moving medium is developed to describe weak scattering of a plane wave by inhomogeneities in the medium and velocity variations for the characterization of flow. When attenuation in the medium is neglected, an expression relating the scattering as a function of angle and frequency to the medium acoustic refractive index variations and spatial motion characteristics is obtained by assuming single scattering and farfield measurement. The results are intended for noninvasive characterization of blood flow but are also applicable to measuring flows of other opaque or conducting media. The method offers a quantitative characterization of turbulent flow in terms of its energy spectrum, with the range of motion inhomogeneities measured on the order of the ultrasound wavelength employed. This approach provides a more complete characterization than Doppler shift methods which do not take into account scattering due to motion-induced inhomogeneities. Measurements of scattering from turbulence behind a grid in a water tank with an ultrasound diffraction apparatus using frequency sweeping and angle scanning produced data yielding a decay characteristic of turbulence in good agreement with theoretical predictions and the results of hot wire techniques in the literature.
