- W2030147851 abstract "]2 A S H I O N S m a y not change i n m e d i c i n e as quickly as they do in other spheres, but change they surely do. In pediatrics it is in the realm of infant care that changes have probably been most frequent, and some which have occurred within the span of the last 40 years-that is within the professional lifetime of the pediatrician whose eminence we honor in this issue are described here. The over-riding problem is whether changes in fashion result in improvement of treatment or whether, like other fashions, they merely tend to be cyclic. Many, at their height, have appeared to be really progressive, only to subside as more extensive studies show up their defects. Others, heralded as innovations, prove to be but resurrections of long-forgotten publications. Happily there are yet others which represent genuine advances; the interest in genetics, chromatography and karyography, and the rapid expansion of knowledge about enzyme metabolism are no fashions but direct advances in knowledge." @default.
