- W2030230908 abstract "It is often believed that the susceptibility of personality questionnaires to social desirability influences implies a validity loss of neuroticism inventories and the like. Several empirical arguments against this opinion are described. Furthermore, an additional hypothesis is formulated which might give a further explanation of the fact that some subjects obtain higher scores and other subjects lower scores on neuroticism inventories. Interindividual differences in desirability opinion of neuroticism items turn out to be correlated with neuroticism scores in a predictable manner. This finding was crossvalidated with again a positive result. As far as evident from a correlation study in which an external criterion was used, the mean desirability opinion of neuroticism items, which is typical for the subject, seems to be a non-valid source of variance in questionnaire neuroticism, in contradistinction to the traditional social desirability set. The latter set seems to contribute valid variance to neuroticism scores." @default.
