I dette paperet beskriver jeg konkret hvordan slike kommentarer og vurderinger fra tidsskrifters side har pavirket forlop og fremdrift i mitt eget avhandlingsarbeid. I beskrivelsen av denne prosessen trekker jeg inn originale utsnitt fra fagfellers kritikk og redaktorers kommentarer. Disse empiriske kildene brukes for a synliggjore hvilken betydning innspillene har hatt for enkeltbidragene og progresjonen i arbeidet med doktoravhandlingen som helhet. Jeg setter deretter opp innspillene fra tidsskriftene mot kommentarer fra vurderingskomiteen for a sammenligne sjangerkrav i publiseringskanalene med krav og forventninger innenfor institusjonens egne vurderingsrammer. Intensjonen med a bruke disse kildene er a vise hvordan akademiske sjangerkrav kommer til syne i skriving av en artikkelbasert avhandling. Summary This paper focuses on the process of writing dissertations based on publications. Its aim is to document the specific process of writing a thesis within the confines of referees and editorial decision making in scientific journals. The paper explores how this feedback process was experienced through the various phases of writing my own dissertation. This process is documented on the basis of authentic comments from editors and reviewers. These are presented as extracts from written sources provided to the PhD candidate. These empirical sources display the nature of the feedback and decisions related to getting published. An additional empirical source is provided through extracts of the final doctoral committee, offering a supplementary perspective on the research journals’ assessment. Taken together, these sources display how the flow and substance of the published parts of one thesis were influenced by the opinions and feedback of various journal parties. This depiction of the publication process is discussed in relation to academic genres, and the challenge of facing genre conventions in journals along the path to becoming a scholar.
