- W2030746104 abstract "Objective: Perceptions regarding the inconvenience of 2-day bowel preps for colonoscopy led us to compare the patient acceptance, efficacy and convenience of 1 and 2-day preps. Method: A prospective observational study using a survey was designed for patients scheduled for outpatient colonoscopy at a university medical center and a community hospital. Patients were queried: if they completed 1 or 2-day bowel preps; the type of prep used (4L PEG, Sodium phosphate (NaP), or 2L PEG/Ascorbic acid (PEG/A)); the need to use bathroom facilities on the way to the hospital (yes, no); if they were late for their appointment (yes, no); satisfaction with the bowel preparation (extremely satisfied to extremely dissatisfied,5-point Likert scale); and difficulty in completing the bowel prep (significant to none; scored 0-3). Nurses rated the quality of the bowel prep based on bowel wall visibility and bowel content (4-1). Chi-square tests and t-tests were performed using 0.05 two-tailed probability to assess statistical significance. Results: 241 1-day preps were compared with 82 2-day preps. While all PEG prep were 1-day preps and PEG/A preps for 2-days, 77 NaP were 1-day preps and 44 NaP were 2-day preps. There were significant statistical differences between 1 and 2-day bowel preps: 69.4% reported satisfaction with 2-day vs 50.4% for 1-day(p = .0074); and, 4.3% stopped on their way to the hospital in the 1-day group and 11.1% in the 2-day group(p = .036). Furthermore mean difficulty score for completing the preps was lower for the 2-day preps(1.18 for 1-day versus 0.86 for 2-day, p = .022). Finally, there was a statistically significant superiority in the visibility of the bowel wall and bowel content for the 2-day preps: mean of 3.05 for 1-day and 3.37 for 2-day (p = .012). There was no significant difference in patients being late for their appointments. Conclusion: 2-day bowel preps whether NaP or PEG/A solutions achieve higher patient satisfaction scores and nurse assessed cleansing scores. Although patients needed to stop to use bathroom facilities during the trip to the hospital slightly more frequently in the 2-day preps group it did not adversely affect their satisfaction with the preparation and did to make them late for the procedure. Based on this study, we recommend 2-day bowel prep be preferentially administered for outpatient colonoscopy as these preps are superior to 1-day preps in the degree of difficulty in completing the bowel prep, patient satisfaction, and the quality of the bowel prep. Our study coupled with previously published data supporting a higher safety profile for NaP tablets when given as a 2-day prep should make1-day NaP tablet prep obsolete." @default.
