- W2030801049 abstract "Musing on the likely impact of his own formidable contributions to scholarship, Ludwig Wittgenstein once remarked that the most he could expect was that it should first stimulate the writing of a whole lot of rubbish which then might provoke some people to write something good. [Wittgenstein, p. 62] While any intensive review of current writing demonstrates that much rubbish has indeed been heaped upon us, there are signs nevertheless that recycling old materials into reusable new forms is occurring and that some of it is good enough to satisfy even those as demanding as the late Wittgenstein. This survey focuses on scholarly contributions generally held in high regard and a sampling of writing stimulated by the masters. The review itself is designed to offer broad interpretations of how the social and moral sciences have been used in the past and how they need to be reconnected if they are to be of help in contemporary problem-solving efforts. In a real sense this analysis represents a recycling effort.1 No original proposition will be advanced, no fresh revisionist interpretation undertaken, and no startling new conclusion offered. The modesty of the claim, however, does not minimize the difficulty of the undertak? ing. As in the physical realm where each recycling effort takes old prop? erties of old products and applies chemical processes to achieve a new result, so, too, must the chemistry of the recycling mind process a bewil? dering composite of theories, counter theories, and subtly nuanced refinements and distinctions. What is being offered is a vignette of the intellectual history of the social and moral sciences, and a survey of the American institutional landscape which has been influenced by their principles." @default.
