- W2031207733 abstract "As the 2000s open, the Historical Association celebrates its fifty-ninth year at the April meeting to be held in Springdale. The nearly two hundred charter members who formed this organization in 1941 would no doubt join in the celebration since the Association has become the premier statewide organization that focuses on preserving, writing, publishing, and teaching the state's history. These areas of achievement are consistent with the founders' original vision and have led to a better understanding of our history. The AHA, for example, continues to emphasize teaching. With the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the Association cosponsored its first institute for teachers of history, held at the University of in Fayetteville in the summer of 1998. Not only did the forty teachers who attended the two-week institute hail it as a major success, the American Association for State and Local History awarded its sponsoring institutions a Certificate of Commendation in 1999. Established in 1945, the AASLH awards program encourages excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout America. Building on the successes of the first institute, the Association will sponsor a second on the campus of the University of at Monticello in the summer of 2000. These institutes follow passage by the legislature in 1997 of Act 787, which the Association strongly supported and which mandated the teaching of history in the public schools. The institutes are intended to provide teachers with the tools and resources they need to effectively teach the state's history. The Association also promotes education through the respected J. H. Atkinson teaching award, established to honor the memory and legacy of this longtime teacher and advocate of history, and given annually to a teacher of history. It is the Association's highest recognition of achievement in teaching and the monetary award that accompanies it was increased in 1999 because of the success of the recent capital campaign. Inaugurated in 1997, the Letters of Commendation program recognizes institutions for their work in promoting the teaching, interpreting, and communicating of history. In 1999, these commendations were presented to the Cabot Middle School, the Whitehall Social Studies Club, and the Clark County Historical Association. Letters of Commendation will also be presented in 2000. Finally, the Teachers of Studies Council, an AHA constituent group, sponsors Studies Resource Fairs at locations around the state. TASC will sponsor an April 2000 fair at Springdale in conjunction with the AHA annual meeting. These examples illustrate the central importance the Association attaches to the teaching of history. Along with teaching, the preservation, writing, and publishing of the state's history were among the original goals of the Association. The Historical Quarterly and the Lucille Westbrook, Violet B. Gingles, and Walter L. Brown awards highlight the Association's work in this field. The Quarterly has long been recognized as the leading statewide journal of history and is edited by Jeannie Whayne, with Patrick Williams serving as Associate Editor. The Spring 2000 issue features a varied selection of well-researched articles and a regular feature, Arkansas Listings in the National Register of Historic Places. A new feature will soon begin to appear in the Quarterly at the recommendation of Elizabeth Shores, Chair of the Association's Education and Public History Committee and committee members Andrew Roshell Jr., Jim Argue, Tom DeBlack, and John Short. Acting on the committee's proposal that the Quarterly incorporate museum exhibit reviews, the editorial staff has arranged for the first review to focus on the Fay Jones exhibit at the Old State House. The Publications Committee, chaired by Tom DeBlack with Richard Dixon, Jeannie Whayne, Dave Wallis, James Paul Beachboard, and Nancy Britton serving as members, continues to expand availability of the Quarterly through bookstores in the state. …" @default.
