- W2031464800 abstract "It was not until 195]. that Biermann deduced, from observations of comet tails, that ions and electrons should continuously flow away from the Sun. This prediction raised lively interest in experimental investigation of interplanetary space. Consequently, even the very first scientific satellites with high apogee orbits were equipped with instruments suitable for detection of the still hypothetical interplanetary medium. In 1960 Gringauz reported the discovery of ion fluxes with about the expected properties with his instrument on Lunik-2. Shortly thereafter, much more elaborate measurements yielding quantitative details such as the density, temperature and velocity of the flow of charged particles were carried out aboard Mariner—2, and reported by Neugebauer and Snyder in 1963. From that time on, essentially every highly eccentric Earth-orbiting scientific satellite and. all spaceprobes carried instruments for investigation of this phenomenon which had been named “solar wind” by Parker in 1958." @default.
