- W2031490872 abstract "SOME of the background to the stabbing in March 1814 of a young man in Chawton, to which Jane Austen alludes in one of her letters as ‘the Baigent business’,1 has already been explained by Robin Vick. We know that the victim was Stephen Mersh, and that the accused, who was later acquitted, was James Baigent, the ten-year old son of yeoman farmer William (1765–1838) and his second wife Elizabeth Baigen (d. 1845). A large family called Mersh, too, lived in Chawton, although there is no evidence that a Stephen Mersh had been baptised, despite the parish records showing the baptisms of ten children with that surname. Vick also identified Mr Wickham, mentioned in Austen’s letter, as the Honourable William Wickham (1761–1840), the eminent politician and diplomat, and he believed that Wickham’s lawyer friend, who had written to Austen’s brother Edward, was Sir John Bayley.2 As Austen told her sister Cassandra, the lawyer ‘is to be on the Grand Jury’ and, judging by his letters, ‘must be an Excellent Man’. His letters to Wickham, which the latter had passed on to Edward, anticipated the boy’s acquittal on the first charge of ‘maliciously stabbing a person’,3 but gave his opinion ‘for the prosecution for assault’ on the second charge.4" @default.
