- W2031567691 abstract "A: Why should you get this scarce resource rather than I? B: Because I'm least good you are. A: Ah, hah! There you go, violating Neutrality again! B: How so? As Ackerman made me say on p. 334 in reply to that same exclamation, a claim that one is at least good as someone else doesn't violate his rule of Neutrality.' A: And what he made me say on the same page was something to the effect that I could just see that it did. What I would like to have said is something else. Of course the claim doesn't violate the rule he set it up back p. 11, since that rule refers only to claims of superiority for oneself or one's conception of the good. But it is unreasonable for him to set it up that way. B: He couldn't get the results without that form of the rule. A: I think that's so. But now consider. You just said that you're least good I am. Is that really what you mean? B: Well, to tell you the truth, I said it because that's what everyone round here seems to say that point in the conversation. In fact, I'm not really sure what superior means. If you really want to know, I suspect that I may be intrinsically inferior to you. I'm sure I'm stupider, nastier, and more cowardly, and I'm certainly shorter on patience.... A: Do you think that that sort of thing means intrinsically inferior? B: I seem to have mislaid Ackerman's directions on that. But least it means actually inferior, and Ackerman does say that the great thing about this place, unlike behind that dreary veil, is that you don't have to forget who you are and what you're like. A: But, anyway, if you think you are inferior to me, how can you possibly ground a claim to more of this stuff? B: Well, neither of us has mentioned what the stuff is, and it greatly depends on what it is, what possible connection there could be between its distribution and anyone's superiority (as I think Fishkin pointed out). But let's say: compensation. It's dreary being horrible I am. This material stuff, Plato suggested in an earlier dialogue, will help to make up for it. Can't I say that? It doesn't seem to violate Neutrality. Only claims of one's own superiority do that. A: But what Ackerman should say, surely, is: claims of superiority, period. Mustn't he mean that matters of intrinsic superiority and inferiority are not to be mentioned; that Neutral Dialogue doesn't countenance that idea? But let's" @default.
