• W2031759891 abstract "Experiments have been carried out to examine the effects of plastic tensile deformation by small amounts immediately after water quenching on the precipitation in high purity ternary aluminium alloys with X-ray Laue methods and electron microscopic studies in thin foils.The experiments provide evidence that the formation of G. P. zones in Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys is retarded by small plastic deformation and that such a retarding effect is not found in Al-Zn-Mg alloys. In the last alloys dislocations introduced by plastic deformation can form networks during aging, and these networks provide suitable sites for nucleation of G. P. zones. In Al-Zn-Mg alloys the precipitation may start on stacking faults existing in solid solution. The electron micrographs show that cold working decreases the size of precipitates and makes them homogeneous. The disappearance of coarse precipitates within grains can be attributed to a large increase in the number of nucleation sites as a result of deformation. The mechanisms by which the rate of aging is retarded by plastic deformation may be the same as in Al-Cu alloys: one is the sweeping-out of the quenched-in vacancies by the motion of dislocations during plastic deformation or the enhanced annealing rate of vacancies, and the other is the formation of many stable smaller zones of solute atoms, which does not contribute to age hardening, as the results of the interaction between solute atoms and lattice defects. Therefore, the development of the normal G. P. zones is retarded, because the majority of solute atoms already are in a rather stable position." @default.
