- W20317829 abstract "In this article we report on a large scale longitudinal study into the development of language proficiency in Dutch primary school pupils age 8-10. Data on language proficiency and a range of background variables (home language, level of education and occupational status of parents, language background, length of residence for migrants) from 4419 pupils were analyzed. The main outcomes of the study are that while children with a migrant (Turkish/ Moroccan) background develop their skills in Dutch considerably over two years, they are lagging behind as compared to the Dutch reference group. Since other groups with a home language other than standard-Dutch (Frisian, Limburg dialect, other dialects) do not show a similar trend, it is concluded that the use of the standard language is not a crucial factor in the development of language proficiency in primary school. With respect to the background variables, an interesting finding is that the same structural equation model holds for all language groups. The outcomes are discussed in the light of current discussions on the school performance of children with a migrant background." @default.
