- W2031868152 abstract "Mineral analyses are presented of stem parts of Vicia faba L. parasitised by Cuscuta europaea L. Potassium, phosphorus and magnesium are drained by the parasite, whereas such a draining action of the parasite could not be observed in the case of calcium. The highest contents of K, P and Mg were found at or very near the site to which the haustorial coil of Cuscuta was attached. In severely drained host plants the Content of K and P decreased in all stem parts (including the site of attachment of the parasite) to a level below that found in control plants, wherease the Mg concentration at the contact site always considerably exceeded the values in stem parts of control plants. The results can be explained by the existence of phloem unloading processes which release K, P and Mg from the phloem to stem tissues at the site of attachment of Cuscuta. Moreover, it could be demonstrated that the efflux of Mg++ ions from the vacuole of parenchyma cells is smaller at the site of attachment of Cuscuta than in the internodes at both sides of the infected internode." @default.
