This realization presents a daunting challenge for post-genomic-era scientists in deciphering the biochemical and (patho)physiological roles of these enzymes and their metabolites and metabolic networks. This is further complicated by many recent studies showing a rewiring of normal metabolic networks in disease states to give rise to unique pathophysiological functions of enzymes, metabolites, and metabolic pathways.
