- W2032082797 abstract "A family of intermetallic compounds, R5(SixGe4−x), where R=rare earth metal has opened up a unique opportunity to a solution of a century-old problem of the intrinsic relationships between the composition, atomic structure and properties of metallic materials. To date the largest body of knowledge has been accumulated in the system with R=Gd. The known crystal structures of the Gd5(SixGe4−x) phases are closely related to one another and consist of 36 atoms per unit cell distributed among six or nine independent crystallographic sites in orthorhombic or monoclinic crystal systems, respectively. We show that in a certain range of compositions (i.e. when 2<x≤2.1), both the orthorhombic and monoclinic crystal structures can be retained at room temperature at the same value of x. The monoclinic Gd5(Si2.09Ge1.91) alloy undergoes two transformations to the orthorhombic phase: the fully reversible low temperature magnetic/martensitic phase transition, and the high temperature martensitic-like phase transition which appears to be irreversible below ∼730 K signifying the importance of magnetic interactions in this system." @default.
