- W2032104111 abstract "Abstract The finite element method has been used to simulate steady, external fluid flows past submarine models at Reynolds number (based upon model length) equal to 1.2 × 10 7 . Model geometry is comprised of streamlined appendages attached to an axisymmetric hull. An untuned k - ϵ turbulence model was used to close the Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations. Benchmark numerical calculations have been compared with experimental data for flow past an ellipsoid of aspect ratio 6. Convergent numerical solutions for flow past the three-dimensional (3-D) submarine models were obtained using a segregated equation algorithm. These latter numerical simulations resulted in discrete matrix problems involving 325,000 unknowns and required 100 Cray X-MP hours of time on a single central processor. Quality of 3-D numerical solutions can be inferred, in part, from the resolution of the vortical flow structure that emanates from hull/appendage junctures." @default.
