- W2032152016 abstract "The last 25 years have been tumultuous in regard to immunization for the prevention of pertussis.1Although effective vaccines became available 50 years ago, exaggerated fears as to their safety in the 1970s led to their nonuse or minimal use in many countries with resultant epidemic disease. During this same period much was learned about the organism Bordetella pertussis , and this knowledge resulted in the development and present availability of less reactogenic acellular pertussis component diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines (DTaP vaccines).2During the 15-year period from 1980 to 1995 vast amounts of money were spent in the development and testing of DTaP vaccines. Resulting from this, DTaP vaccines are used in many countries throughout the world and 4 different DTaP vaccines are licensed in the United States. Unfortunately in the United States today there is a period of complacency and misinformation about present DTaP vaccines that impedes the use of the best pertussis vaccines as much as the misinformation about whole-cell vaccine safety did in the 1970s.In an article in the October 1998 issue of AAP News a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) Committee on Infectious Diseases wrote that “Because no direct comparisons of these products [referring to the four licensed DTaP vaccines] have been conducted, no clinical data exist to support superiority or benefit of one DTaP vaccine over others. Efficacy and safety profiles of the four approved acellular vaccines appear to be similar. Despite extensive efforts, no serologic correlates of immunity have yet been demonstrated for pertussis. Therefore, the Academy considers all licensed DTaP products to be equally acceptable.”3The above politically opportune views are tragic in 1999 because they are substantially wrong and hinder progress toward the introduction of truly better DTaP vaccines in the future. The pressure …" @default.
